Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is one of the most effective and visually striking floating plants for the natural aquarium. Known for its smooth, circular, pea-green leaves that sit flat on the water's surface, it is famous for producing long, trailing white roots that can reach deep into the tank. These roots provide an unparalleled habitat for shrimp and shrimplets, offering a massive surface area for biofilm to thrive and a safe haven for vulnerable livestock. As a fast-growing surface plant, Frogbit acts as a powerful biological filter, aggressively stripping nitrates and phosphates from the water column to keep your ecosystem balanced and algae-free.

The biggest risk with store-bought plants is the hidden presence of copper-based pesticides and chemical treatments used in industrial nurseries, which are lethal to invertebrates. Our Frogbit is grown exclusively within our own home-based ecosystems in Chester, alongside our high-grade Neocaridina colonies. This ensures every plant is 100% shrimp and snail safe, completely free from the toxins found in mass-imported stock. Because they are cultivated in the same stable, clean water as our livestock, they can be added directly to your aquarium with total peace of mind.

This listing is for a generous portion of 10 healthy, vibrant Amazon Frogbit. Every portion is hand-selected from our established maturation tanks to ensure you receive hardy, well-developed plants with strong root systems. Whether you are looking to create a "jungle" look with trailing roots or simply need a reliable nutrient sponge for your breeding project, our home-grown Frogbit offers a superior, chemical-free alternative to commercial imports.

Beginner Care & Helpful Information

Trailing Roots and Shrimplet Safety
The defining feature of Frogbit is its root system. These feathery roots are a magnet for shrimplets, providing them with a 24/7 food source in the form of trapped particles and biofilm. In a breeding tank, these roots offer essential vertical structure, allowing shrimp to inhabit the upper layers of the water column safely. If the roots become too long for your scape, they can be trimmed with sharp scissors without harming the plant.

Managing Surface Moisture
While Frogbit is very hardy, it does have one specific weakness: it does not like the tops of its leaves to stay wet. Constant splashing from a filter or heavy condensation from a tight-fitting lid can cause the leaves to rot or turn yellow. For the best results, ensure there is some air circulation above the water and keep the plants away from heavy surface agitation or "waterfall" style filter outlets.

Light and Nutrient Export
Frogbit thrives under moderate to high lighting. Because it has access to atmospheric CO2, it grows much faster than submerged plants, making it an elite tool for controlling algae. As the plant produces new "runners" and covers the surface, you can simply remove the older plants to permanently "export" absorbed nitrates from your aquarium, keeping the water chemistry stable and clean.

Biological Indicator
Frogbit is an excellent "canary in the coal mine" for your tank’s nutrient levels. If the leaves start to turn pale or yellow, it’s often a sign that the plant has stripped all the nitrates from the water and needs a boost of liquid fertiliser. Healthy Frogbit should have thick, leathery, bright green leaves with a spongy, buoyant underside.

Recommended Conditions

  • Lighting: Moderate to High (Faster growth in high light)
  • Temperature: 12°C – 30°C
  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0
  • Water Flow: Low to Moderate (Floating plants prefer calmer surfaces)
  • Nutrient Level: High nitrate absorption capabilities
