Red Root Floaters (Phyllanthus fluitans) are arguably the most stunning floating plants available for the freshwater aquarium. Unlike most other floaters that stay strictly green, these unique South American ferns are famous for their ability to turn a deep, fiery red under the right lighting conditions. True to their name, they produce a dense network of bright red, trailing roots that create a massive surface area for biofilm to thrive, making them a premier natural habitat for shrimplets and grazing adults. As a fast-growing surface plant, they are exceptional at exporting excess nitrates and phosphates from the water column, helping to maintain a balanced, algae-free ecosystem.

The biggest danger when adding live plants to a shrimp-only setup is the risk of hidden toxins, as mass-imported greenery is frequently treated with copper-based pesticides or chemical fertilisers that are lethal to invertebrates. Our Red Root Floaters are grown exclusively within our own home-based ecosystems in Chester, alongside our high-grade Neocaridina colonies. This ensures they are 100% shrimp and snail safe, completely free from the pesticides and chemical residues often found in industrial nurseries. Because they are cultivated in the same stable, clean water as our livestock, they can be added directly to your tank with total confidence.

This listing is for a generous portion of 10 healthy, vibrant Red Root Floaters. Every portion is hand-selected from our maturation tanks to ensure you receive hardy, well-developed specimens with active root systems. Whether you are looking for a high-impact "pop" of colour for your aquascape or a reliable nutrient sponge for your breeding project, our home-grown Red Root Floaters offer a superior, chemical-free alternative to commercial imports.

Beginner Care & Helpful Information

Achieving the Red Colouration
While Red Root Floaters can grow in lower light, they will stay green in those conditions. To achieve the signature deep red leaves and roots, they require moderate to high lighting and a well-balanced nutrient environment. A slight limitation in nitrates combined with high-intensity light and iron supplementation is often the secret to triggering the most intense red pigment.

Water Flow and Surface Agitation
Red Root Floaters are particularly sensitive to water flow. Like most floating plants, they do not like the tops of their leaves to stay wet; constant splashing or being pushed underwater by a strong filter outlet will cause them to rot. For the best results, keep them in still or very low-flow areas. Using a floating "plant corral" or airline tubing to keep them away from the filter return is highly recommended.

Nutrient Export and Maintenance
As a fast-growing species, Red Root Floaters are incredible at outcompeting nuisance algae for nutrients. As the plant produces new runners and covers the surface, you should periodically remove the older growth. This process permanently "exports" absorbed nitrates and phosphates from your system, keeping your water chemistry pristine for your shrimp.

Biofilm and Shrimplet Safety
The namesake red roots are a magnet for microscopic organisms and biofilm. In a breeding tank, these roots provide an essential 24/7 food source for newly hatched shrimp. The dense surface cover also provides "dappled shade," which reduces stress for more sensitive livestock and mimics the natural environment of tropical slow-moving streams.

Recommended Conditions

  • Lighting: Moderate to High (Faster growth in high light)
  • Temperature: 12°C – 30°C
  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0
  • Water Flow: Low to None (Still water is best)
