Floating Plants
Floating plants are the ultimate natural filter for any freshwater aquarium. By sitting at the water's surface, these species have direct access to atmospheric CO2 and high light levels, allowing them to grow rapidly and act as "nitrate sponges." This fast growth outcompetes algae for excess nutrients in the water column, helping to keep your tank clear and biologically balanced. Beneath the surface, the dense, trailing root systems create a massive surface area for biofilm to thrive, offering an essential natural larder for shrimplets and grazing adults. This overhead cover also mimics the natural dappled light of wild tropical streams, significantly reducing stress for your livestock and encouraging them to display their most vibrant, natural colours.
The primary concern when adding live plants to a shrimp-only setup is the risk of chemical contamination. Most commercially available plants are mass-produced in industrial nurseries where they are treated with copper-based pesticides to eliminate snails and pests before export. These residues can linger and prove lethal to sensitive invertebrates. Our floating plants are grown exclusively within our own home-based ecosystems in Chester, alongside our high-grade Neocaridina colonies. This means they are 100% free from pesticides, copper, or harmful chemical treatments. Because they are cultivated in the same stable, clean water as our livestock, they can be added directly to your tank with total confidence, providing a safe, hardy, and immediate biological boost to your natural aquarium.
